RCVS GUIDELINES FOR Non-clients – clients of another veterinary surgeon / practice

3.45  A client of another veterinary surgeon or practice who requests an emergency consultation may be redirected to that veterinary surgeon or practice (or the emergency service provider for that veterinary surgeon or practice). The on-duty veterinary surgeon to whom the initial request has been made may decline to carry out the consultation. First aid and pain relief should, however, be provided to the animal if, for whatever reason, the owner cannot contact his or her usual veterinary surgeon or practice or the circumstances are exceptional and the condition of the animal is such that it should be seen immediately.

If you think you are eligible for the PDSA please telephone 01253 838585 or refer to www.pdsa.org.uk/vet-services/eligibility

At The Clinic

You may not see your regular vet but the person who looks after your pet will be a fully qualified and experienced veterinary surgeon who works at The Veterinary Health Centre.

By its very nature emergency work is unpredictable and it is difficult to schedule appointments so you may have to wait before the vet can see you and your pet; we will always see and treat the sickest pet first. It is important that you let us know when to expect you and to provide us with enough information to give us an idea of the type of emergency.

If your pet has to be hospitalised for any reason it will stay at The Veterinary Health Centre, 4 Greenways, Lytham St Annes and a vet will be available throughout the night. (See also Section 8 – Transferring Your Pet).

Visiting Your Pet

When your pet is admitted to the Clinic it is understandable that you want to spend time with him or her. However, for both practical and Health and Safety reasons we ask that you do not visit whilst your pet is being treated by the Emergency Vet Service.

Transferring Your Pet

Wherever possible your pet will be transferred back to your regular daytime practice once they re-open. Ideally we would like you to be involved in the transfer of your pet as it gives you the opportunity to speak to both the emergency vet at discharge and to your regular vet about on-going treatment. Pets will not be discharged until they are deemed stable to travel.

Home Visits

Occasionally house visits can be arranged, but it can take a bit of time as the duty vet may have other patients to attend to. In addition the level of treatment that can be provided away from the clinic will be quite limited.
When they are possible, charges for a home visit will vary according to the time of day/night of the call out but, typically, start at £250.00.

Questions You Should Ask

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if there is anything that you are not clear about. You may have to make difficult decisions on behalf of your pet and it is important that you have all the information available on your pet’s condition and possible treatment options.
